Achilles tendon injury

How Does Physiotherapy Help?
Physiotherapy is helpful for restricted joint mobility and decreased muscle strength in the same areas, both before and during recovery from surgeries. A physiotherapist helps find solutions for discomfort caused by sedentary work and other musculoskeletal issues.
If possible, bring your test results with you. Exercises are easier to perform when wearing comfortable sportswear.
Symptoms
- Pain
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Stiffness
Pain and stiffness usually decrease during physical activity, as the leg “warms up,” and worsen again as it cools down. They are most noticeable in the mornings after waking up.
Causes
- Repetitive or excessive strain on the tendon
- Insufficient recovery time between loads
- Certain anatomical characteristics, such as Haglund’s deformity
- Constant pressure on the tendon, for example, caused by tight footwear

Risk factors
- Sudden increase in (training) load
- Sport: Running and jumping disciplines; this syndrome is especially common among middle-distance runners
- Training environment: Cold climates and mountainous conditions are considered risk factors
- Gender: Studies show men have a higher injury risk, though the reasons are unclear
- Age: It is believed that injury risk increases with age, but studies on this are sometimes contradictory
- Physical characteristics: Including flat feet, overweight, tight or weak lower limb muscles, and limited mobility in lower limb joints
- Previous lower limb injury
- Worn-out or narrow training shoes: Insufficient support for the foot arch and cushioning for the heel / constant pressure on the tendon
- Medications: Use of certain antibiotics
Prevention
- Avoid sudden increases in training load; increase the load gradually
- Proper warm-up should precede training
- Choose the right and comfortable training shoes. Foot arches need adequate support, and heels need sufficient cushioning. Remember that shoes wear out quickly
- Lower limb (sport-specific) training, including joint mobilization if needed
- Weight loss if necessary
- As varied training as possible
