Why do we need massage? An evidence-based overview
Massage is not just a relaxing luxury, but an evidence-based way to support health, with wide-ranging physical and mental benefits. The following points highlight the key advantages of massage, based on scientific research.
1. Reducing Stress and Anxiety
- Massage lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) levels and increases serotonin and dopamine levels, which improves mood and reduces anxiety.
- Study: Field et al. (2005) found that even a single 20-minute massage session can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels.
- It is ideal for preventing chronic stress, insomnia, and burnout.
2. Pain relief and muscle tension reduction
- Massage helps relax tense muscles, temporarily improves mobility, and can reduce chronic pain (e.g., lower back pain, neck pain, or headaches).
- Meta-analysis: Furlan et al. (2008) concluded that massage is effective in reducing chronic lower back pain.
- It is suitable for office workers, athletes, and those suffering from chronic pain.
3. Improving blood circulation and lymph flow
- Massage stimulates blood circulation and the lymphatic system, helping tissues absorb oxygen and nutrients more effectively.
- Studies have shown that massage increases local blood flow and aids in the removal of waste products from the body (Weerapong et al., 2005).
- However, it is important to note that these effects are usually short-term, and exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist provide more lasting benefits.
4. Strengthening the Immune System
- Regular massage can increase the activity of natural killer cells and overall immune function. Natural killer cells are part of the innate immune system responsible for identifying and destroying virus-infected and tumor cells.
- Study: Ironson et al. (1996) found that HIV-positive patients who received regular massage showed significant improvements in immune markers.
5. Improved Sleep Quality
- Massage helps improve sleep quality, especially for those suffering from sleep disorders or chronic fatigue.
- Field (1998) found that massage increases delta wave activity in the brain, which is associated with deep sleep.
6. Psychological well-being and body awareness
- Massage strengthens body awareness and creates a positive connection with your body, which is especially beneficial for depression, trauma, or anxiety.
- Several studies support the use of massage as a complementary therapy to psychological treatment (Moyer et al., 2004).
7. Recovery from training and physical exertion
- Massage accelerates muscle recovery, reduces soreness, and helps prevent injuries.
- Studies show that athletes who received post-training massage recovered faster and experienced less muscle soreness (Zainuddin et al., 2005).
Summary
Massage is a scientifically proven method to support mental and physical health. Whether the goal is stress relief, pain reduction, better sleep, or boosting the immune system, massage is an effective and natural way to take care of yourself.
